Film Hub South East is a key part of the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN), working to ensure that people across the South East of England can enjoy a rich and diverse screen culture, no matter where they live or what their circumstances. Serving Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Surrey, and Sussex, the Hub collaborates with cinemas, film festivals, film societies, and community groups to strengthen the region’s film exhibition sector. Its mission is to grow audiences for a wide range of independent British and international films, particularly through shared, collective viewing experiences, while also building a confident, connected, and sustainable exhibition industry.

What To Know

Key Information

Supported by the BFI through National Lottery funding, Film Hub South East is delivering £401,725 per year in resources, training, programming, and networking opportunities for exhibitors in the region. Alongside its exhibition work, the Hub also manages BFI NETWORK South East, which invests in the development of emerging filmmaking talent. By allocating funding and fostering a supportive, diverse creative community of writers, directors, and producers, the Hub helps bring new voices to the screen. The organisation also leads the BFI Film Academy Plus, an initiative designed to empower young people aged 16 to 25, nurturing their passion for screen culture, developing their filmmaking skills, and opening pathways into careers in the film industry.

Since its formation in 2013, Film Hub South East has worked to expand access to specialised and British independent films across its wide geographical region. This includes targeting areas with little or no cultural cinema infrastructure, helping to ensure that the benefits of screen culture are spread evenly. By combining audience development with direct investment in filmmaking talent and industry skills, the Hub plays a vital role in both the cultural and economic life of the South East. Whether it’s funding a local film club, supporting a filmmaker’s first short, or providing career-building opportunities for young creatives, Film Hub South East works to connect people, stories, and communities through the power of film.
