The ICO’s partners are predominantly not-for-profit organisations operating within community spaces, prioritising local audiences and championing cinema beyond the mainstream. These venues create a strong sense of place and play a vital role in transforming local economies. Through programming, training, film distribution, bespoke consultancy services, and extensive practical resources, the ICO supports these venues to thrive. It curates a network of over 20 cinemas, festivals, and mixed arts venues across the UK, ensuring that life-changing cinema is accessible to diverse audiences within their own communities. 

Founded in 2003 by Catharine Des Forges, the ICO began with the vision that everyone in the UK should have access to inspiring cinema. Over time, this vision has expanded to include supporting cinema professionals through training and professional development, increasing access to diverse films via distribution and screening initiatives, and providing expert advice to help cinemas start, sustain, and grow. From an initial team of three staff members, the ICO has grown into a dynamic organisation of 22 staff, driven by passion and expertise to build a robust, innovative, and inclusive independent film sector.
